Monthly Wrap-up & TBR: May-June 2020

Kia ora! Here is New Zealand, we are 7 days straight of having no new Covid-19 cases, and only 1 person still to recover. As PM Jacinda says ‘we went hard, we went early’ to stamp out this virus and I guess what we set out to do as a Nation, we have achieved. I hope that whatever the Government now decides to do, we keep some strict entry requirements in place over the coming months to keep this corona-virus out.

This last weekend of May also ties in with New Zealand celebrating the Queen’s birthday, being the first Monday in June. Happy Birthday Your Majesty. AND also the perfect long weekend, in the middle of the year to take a break and read a little more.

I’ve read 30 books for 2020, finally ahead of schedule for my Goodreads Challenge of 50 books this year. I’ve got a few on my TBR list

Here are the books I read in May:

  1. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban always a 5 star read.
  2. The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom. I think this is a good coming-of-age book to read.
  3. Beautiful Burn (The Maddox Brothers #4). My attempt at finishing a series I started a few years ago. It was a hot read. Pun intended.
  4. A Beautiful Funeral (The Maddox Brothers #5). Finishing the series, and it had me BAWLIN’. I’m not ashamed to admit it.
  5. Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston. An intentional Popsugar Challenge read (pink cover). It’s cute, in a new adult love sort of way.

I’m sad to say that I DNF’d Life as a Casketeer: What the Business of Death can Teach the Living. I’ve put it back on the TBR to try again later on. I’ve also put Break Your Glass Slippers by Amanda Lovelave and Rock Wedding back on the TBR shelf.

Still reading: Calling All Witches! The Girls Who Left Their Mark on the Wizarding World. I’m not sure I’m gonna finish this. I’m up to page 30 and at this point, it’s just all very repetitive.

Here are the books I want to read in June:

  1. The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzanne Collins. Gotta dust off my love of Hunger Games from the shelves. I didn’t realise it was gonna be such a huge read, over 500 pages. I was thinking Novella size when I first heard it was coming out. Wrong! lol.
  2. Aue by Becky Manawatu. I want to read more New Zealand fiction, also towards to BLK’s challenge below. Hadn’t heard of this book until the challenge. I will have to be in the right mood to read this and the next book:
  3. Know My Name by Chanel Miller. It sounds like a harrowing memoir and a powerful read.

Briefly mentioned before. this month I’ve signed up to a two-month long no-pressure reading challenge for Book Loving Kiwis on Goodreads. I’ve selected 3 books to read, and they are below.

  1. Becoming by Michelle Obama. It’s been on my TBR pile for a couple months. I watched the doco on Netflix. Now my hubby loves Michelle Obama too. Gotta read.
  2. The Girl Who Reads on the Metro by Christine Feret-Fleury
  3. Heartless by Marissa Meyer

I randomly picked up Falling Into Place by Amy Zhang for this month too, plus continuing with the Harry Potter series reread, rounds my total list of books for June to 8. I may need to spread these out over July.

What’s on your TBR for June?

xoxo Sharlene
